About Bart Beck

THE HILTON

It was on this trip that Louise and I first stayed in a Motel. They were not known as Motels, at that time, they were Tourist's Cabins. They were little, one room cabins that were equipped with a pull chain light, in the center, a double bed with a worn out mattress, and a Bippy, out in the back yard. The going rate was $1.50 per night.

Another accommodation that was quite popular with tourists, at that time, was Tourists Rooms. These were rooms in private homes and were much the same as the B&B that we have today, except that the owners didn't furnish breakfast. We used this accommodation, frequently during later trips and, in most cases, found them to be quite satisfactory. We also discovered that if we stopped a little early, we would be able to talk with the operators and find out some of the local history and gossip.
