Louise was raised on a small farm, east of Three Rivers which, if you were to take a diagonal course across the fields, was about a mile from the Thoms farm. Now she grew up with a definite disadvantage. She was an only daughter and had three younger brothers. That in itself would, under ordinary circumstances, discourage many people, but these were not ordinary brothers. They were the most conniving, slippery little rascals that ever lived. They could think of all kinds of ways to get each other, and anyone else who might be available into trouble, and be able to, themselves look as innocent as little angels which they were not. I know that they all thought that I was OK, but that did not deter them from pulling their slippery little tricks on me. I had to be on my guard every minute because they had me outnumbered, three to one.
