It was during those depression years and while we were living on the old Thoms farm, that my brother, Elwin, and I were in the woods, near the river (Portage) when we saw three or four city kids coming toward us, in our woods. Elwin bristled right up and said, to me, “watch me run those birds out of here”. He threw his shoulders back and pranced over toward them. When he got within just a few feet of them, he caught his foot on something and fell flat on his face, right at their feet.
Now, if you can think of anything that could blow your ego any more completely, let me know and I will pass it on to Elwin. The city kids got a big laugh out of it and so did I. In fact, I still do and I am sure that Elwin does now also.
