I guess that our next vacation was a trip around the North Shore of Lake Superior, with Jim, Frances, and Eloise Shively. Louise and I were, at that time, using a car-top tent on an Oldsmobile and the Shivleys had a Station Wagon. They also had a tent with them that was used, on occasion.

We had a lot of fun, on that trip. We always had fun when we traveled or camped with the Shivleys. We especially enjoyed the scenery, on the Lake Superior trip, because the highway through Ontario had been opened to traffic only the fall before, and the greater part of it had been built through virgin forest. There was not a sign of human occupation between Hawk Junction and Marathon.

The trip took us from Three Rivers to the Straits of Mackinaw and to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, then on to the west end of Lake Superior. We then crossed back into The United States at Portage. This is where the Voyageurs made their Portage from the western streams, into Lake Superior, on their way down through the Great Lakes, to Montreal. We continued through Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, to Saint Ignace and then home.
