During the summer and Fall of 1937 the paper company, for whom I was working, was building a Pulp and Paper Mill in Plymouth, North Carolina. In early November I received word that they were getting ready to start up and they were in need of another Steam Turbine Operator. At that time we owned a six cylinder, two-door, Oldsmobile that was in pretty good shape, so we just packed a few things and took off for, what we then thought was, the deep South.

We drove straight through, about 1000 miles, and after being interviewed and hired, we turned right around and returned to Michigan. I packed what things I needed and went back to Plymouth. This was a lot of traveling in a very short time and we saw very little of the beautiful, mountainous country that we passed through. In the years that have followed, we have traveled, quite extensively, through much of that country.
